17. Three-part equal counterpoint must be so written, that the harmony may at all times be readily recognized ; although we have only three parts for the presentation of four-part chords. It is quite easy to follow this rule, because the inner part (alto or tenor) has more room to develop an independent leading. For this reason the inner part will be able to take leaps, particularly of a fourth or fifth, oftener than in four-part writing ; and this will be advisable when such leadings result in making the harmony fuller.
