STATE OF RELIGION.
This review of religious conditions has disclosed something of the state of religion which accompanied these conditions. In the nation at large, following the French and Indian War, there was a perceptible relaxa- tion in morals, and religion suffered a se...rious decline. After the Revolution the state of morals and religion was lower than at any time in the nation's history. What was true of the nation was measurably true of New Hamp- shire. The agitation which preceded the war, the concen- tration of interest and effort in waging the war, the trou- blesome times of readjustment in government and in business, the lax habits of men returning from the army, were all detrimental to the upbuilding of the life of the Spirit. Scepticism and the so called French infidelity aopeared in New Hampshire, but while Congress dis- agreed with Franklin, who thought prayers for divine help necessary, we find that the New Hampshire legislature, of 1784, was opened with solemn services in the North Church at Portsmouth, and such continued to be the custom.
