But to become so obsessed with the philosophy of individualism as to believe that the sex relation con- cerns nobody but the man and the woman who enter into such relations, and that society has no rights of inter- ference or obligations of regulation, is little short of madness. Ever since the time when man first stood erect, and thus became distinguished from the brute creation from which he had sprung, his union with his mate has been recognized by some primitive bond of social ceremony, and... has been re- stricted by some crude form of social custom.
