Again and again she longed for Dr.
Holley. How quickly he could make the old Indian well again! Sometimes she felt like sending for him or even for the physician at the Fort, but she was afraid of what Tataquit- namse might do or say. She wondered why the physician at the Fort didn't hear of the sickness and come to the camp. It was in his territory. But then she supposed he ought to be notified. She could see very well why this wasn't done. The medicine men were jealous of any one who encroach...ed upon their rights ; they were particularly so of a genuine physician.
So they kept the fact of the sickness away from the authorities at the Fort, and went on practising their disgusting rites and doing a vast amount of injury with no good at all.
There was much sickness in the camp just at that time. The old man's case was not the only one. There were several women and children sick and two or three men. There had .also been three or four deaths attended by the usual horrible "savage rites. In the tepee next to that occupied by the old man there was, among others, a child sick that Matouchon felt sure would die.
