This raises the question as to whether these symp- toms when present may not be due to involvement of other organs — prostate, seminal vesicles, bladder wall, etc., possibly to a very slight extent, the extension being along the lymphatics, instead of being simply a reflex sign of the kidney involvement. The persistence after operation of these most... distressing symptoms is at least an indication for early diagnosis and operation, and certainly the best results are to be expected when the diagnosis is made and the proper treatment instituted before the onset of bladder irritability.
Pain Not Associated with Urination. — Thirteen patients were free from any pain referable to the kidney or ureter. Of these, 6 had ureters that were readily 122 RENAL TUBERCULOSIS catheterized. The other 7 had been cystoscoped, the opposite side readily catheterized in each instance, but it was found impossible to pass any instruments up the ureters of the infected kidneys.
