It was successftilly treated by the bean alone, the ef- fects of which, in relaxing the tetanically contracted muscles, are described as remarkable. The muscles of the back were the last to yield to its influence.
In the Lancet of August 10, 1867, Dr. Campbell, of Lincolnshire, records a trial of this agent in a severe case of tetanus occurring in a delicate girl of twelve years. Slightly wounded in the hand on New Year's day, symptoms of lo...ck-jaw occurred two weeks after, but passed off to come on again more severely on the 1st of March. Continuing to get worse until the 13th, Dr. Campbell was called in consultation, and describes her as a most pitiable creature. The least noise brought on opisthotonos of so severe a nature, that she rested on the back of her head and heels. The muscles of the back were contracted in such a way as to cause Potts' curvature of the spine. The scapulas were drawn backward so much as to fix the chest and render respi- ration difficult.
