To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It was 800 feet in circum- ference, built of logs twenty to thirty inches thick. The wall was fourteen feet high, and suiTounded by a ditch fourteen feet broad and ten deep. It contained barracks for three himdred men, and was in- tended to mount sixteen guns.— OenUeman's Magazine, xxvi, 6. — Ed.
Digitized by Google NAVIGATIOK OP THE OSWEGO KIVER. 181 has a glacis. We did not notice any out work. It was nearly finished in 1760.
The English have built around the fort, at long gun shot, four very
... complete block houses, one of which looks upon the side of which we have spoken, and another upon the river. This fort could be turned at cannon shot. On the side above the river, there is a kind of curtain which commands the fort, where it would be very easy to open trenches. The ground sinks down towards the fort.
The entrance of the Oswego River is narrow, on account of the rocks under water which occur in the middle. A little above, at the point of two gravelly banks, the pass is narrow and very difficult.
