ST. THOMAS'S CHURCH, N. Y. CITY. 121 and week-days, mostly in New York, but to some extent out of the city. The chief engagement I formed was at the kindly urgency of members of the Vestry of St. Thomas's Church, New York. This was in November, 1856, and extended into March, 1857. The Church was without a rector, Dr. E. Neville having: resigned in the summer of 1856, and I was placed in full charge o...f all ser- vices on Sundays, and occasional services on other days. Various clergymen at intervals preached, when requested by the Vestry. Suffice it to say, that the work done by me in St. Thomas's was en- tirely acceptable up to the close of my engage- ment. I was also given to understand that, if I were willing and ready to take the position, the Vestry would call me to the rectorship. I thought over the matter long and anxiously, and prayed to God to direct me to a right decision. The church edifice at this date was on the northwest corner of Broadway and Houston Street, and there was even then talk of selling the property, and removing to an eligible site up-town on the Fifth Avenue.
