A large cart, for example, filled with stones, which required at least two horses for its removal, was pushed and dragged by human beings attached to the shafts, wheels, etc. Water-carriers were sometimes seen with iron collars around their necks, an iron chain binding two of them together. We made a good offing for fear of hidden rocks, taking a direct course to the south, leaving Borneo (Bourbon?), another French island, upon the right, and the cliffs of the Isle of France astern.
