Sumner was a man pre-eminently true to his convictions of right. It was in this sign he conquered. He did not stop to con- sider whether the position he took would bring favor or reproach. To the establishment of this doctrine of equal rights among men with- out distinction of color or race; to the emancipation and elevation of the four millions of the African race whom he found in bondage and lived to see freedmen and citizens of this Republic, he consecrated the many years of his public service with a singleness of purpose that never swerved a moment, with an unflagging zeal and an energy that never tired.
