Liberty to labor. It cut the iron shackles of the ne- gro slave, and for him, and for the use of his emanci- pated hand, it caused the severed links to be melted and moulded into implements of husbandry and the tools of free, wage-returning toil.
Liberty to learn. The lines of the primer at which comparatively few of the race enthralled had even dared to take a stealthy glance, or over whose pages in hidden solitude the curious and ambitious slaves had only been able to see a blurred surface of indecipherable signs, was opened and outspread upon the lap of the Yankee school- marm, now duly installed in their midst.
