The pubhc mind ^^^^^* had been called to the subject by the energetic appeals of the celebrated ' Boatswain Smith,' a quondam sailor turned cleric, who preac...hed on the quays and elsewhere, and attracted considerable attention. The institution was formed, and took the name of the ' Seamen's Friend So- ciety and Bethel Union,' which has continued its useful labours to the present time with considerable acceptance.
More than usual interest was excited by the election for Contest the mayoralty on St. Luke's Day, 1821. The candidates ^^^^H^^^^ were Mr Eichard BuUin, banker, nephew of Mr. Thomas Leyland, mayor the previous year ; and Mr. Wilham Molyneux, merchant.
