Eobert Hamblin, who followed the occupation of a barber at Lynn, in Norfolk, con- ceived the plan of substituting a floating lightship for a fixed lighthouse in situations where it would be utterly impossible to place any built-up structure ; and to this man's genius we owe this most eminently useful system which has now been adopted all over the civilised world.
