To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

Hoes, D. D. , is an event of too much importance to pass unnoticed by those who were his friends in life, and who revere his memory. His death is a bereavement to a wider circle than his immediate family. The community in which he lived, and the Church of which he was so faithful a minister, share the bereavement with those who were united to him by the closer ties of kindred. As one of the number who enjoyed his friend- ship, who saw much of him in his later years, and who appre- ciated his hi...gh, strong character, I beg to tender to you, and to all the members of his^ family, my sincere condolence, and to offer a humble tribute at his grave.
Dr. Hoes has left a name and record which those who sur- vive him can gratefully cherish. He was not an ordinary man. He was endowed with characteristics which gave him distinc- tiveness and individuality. His tall, erect, and manly figure was not more striking than the moral and intellectual propor- tions of his nature.
One of his marked characteristics was his unswerving Fidel- ity.
