The changes which constitute nu- trition and growth must take place in each cell, [59] as if each were a separate individual. Therefore, every cell must come into contact with food, after the latter has undergone changes which fit it for use as building material, or fuel. Voracity and idleness in the mother starve many a child by loading the blood with poisonous products de- rived from the food. When ill-digested prod- ucts pass into the blood, they act as cHnkers do in the stove, and extinguish, rather than sustain, the life fires.
