It has long been the custom of certain corporations and com- panies in this State to operate Avhat is known as a "company store''' as an adjunct to some other business at which employes are compelled to buy their supplies. The rule in such cases ap- pears to be to settle with the employe by deducting the amount of the store bill and giving the company check for the balance, if any, instead of pa t ying him cash or by check, and allowing the employe to buy where he pleases. A violation of the co...mpany's rules in this respect, it is said, results in the employe's dis- charge.
This system is inherently wrong, destroys competition, af- fords facilities for many impositions upon the defenseless and demoralizes and enslaves the individual who is obliged to sub- mit to such tyranny and oppression.
It was an issue in the late elections in this State, and the decision rendered at the polls makes it incumbent upon the ma- jority to see to it that such legislation is passed as will effect- ually relieve that class of our fellow-citizens who, by reason of iheir immediate necessity and environment, cannot protect themselves against this encroachment upon natural rights.
