The total mileage of inland transportation routes of the two Eepublics at the beginning of the present year (January 1, 1884) was about as follows : Untied States, Mexico.
Railways 120,000 3,000 Navigable rivers 25,000 2,000 Canals 4,000 Total U9,000 5,000 Mexico, to be on a level with the United States in this... respect, should have the following mileage of interior transportation routes, viz : From the stand-point of area which is 25 per cent, that of the United States, 37,250 miles, all but about 2,000 of which must be railways.
From the stand-point of population which is 19^ per cent, that of the United States, 29,353 miles, all but about 2,000 of which must be rail- ways.
From the stand-point of natural resources and capabilities, which are f^s great in proportion to area as those of the United States, 37,250 miles, all but about 2,000 of which must be railways.
