As the reef dipped towards the south, it at once became evident that all land lying to the south- ward, which, except for the first thousand feet or so, had been considered as worthless, was almost certainly underlaid by the reef and therefore of great prospective value. These deep-level areas were promptly acquired by capitalists and proprietary syndicates.
