But, Mr. President, I know that that view of protection cannot prevail if protection is to be rested by ,its advocates upon a system of bargain and trade. I believe in protection, but I wish to buy no man's vote for it. If the majority of the... people of the United States come to the con- clusion that it is better for the country to abandon protec- tion and establish a revenue tariff or free trade — under any name whatever — then let them do it, and I for one will put out no hand to stay them by bargaining and trading the respective private interests of different parts of our country.
If they are wrong in abandoning protection, then they wiU find it out and come back. If they are right in abandoning protection, then we will confess our error, according to the outcome.
