An indemnity was demanded by the American Government, and for a time considerable apprehension as to the result was felt. On April 9th, 1888, it was announced in Madrid that an Agreement had been come to, on the intervention of Mr. Kirby Green (England) and Signer Cantagalli (Italy), between Mr. Reed Lewis, the American Consul at Tangier, and the delegates of the Sult-an, Muley Hassan, to refer the dispute to an Arbitral Commission, Mr.
Lewis, if necessary, to name an umpire, who it was anticip...ated would be Signer CantagalU. The dispute was apparently settled in May, but broke out again more bitterly in October. The matter was finally submitted to the decision of Arbitrators, Italy (that is Signer CantagalJi) being chosen Umpire. Tbe resfllt has not been ' ascertained.
