There is more money than the banks can use, unless the bankers enlarge their range of action, or the public use their money more themselves. There are lots of opportunities where one man could help another, by lending him money to take a trade or extend his trade, where a banker dare not ; so the money lies idle, and unproductive to the nation. It may be suggested that the present is quite an exceptional time ; that we are, and have been, passing through a period of depression that has perplexe...d the keenest economical in- quirer. But if the causes are as suggested by me, there is every reason to fear not only the continuance, but more frequent recurrence, of these long depressions.
CAPITAL. 195 There have been times in which the crises have been more acute, but never any in which they have been so prolonged as from 1874 to 1879. This cloud will pass away, but if we are wise, some steps will be taken to remove the cause. There must be a cause, and the same should be ascertained and removed.
