Few lakes can justify the use of this management technique because of the high cost of raising fish to a catchable size and the poor return-to-creel winterkill. In fact, some states (Michigan in par- ticular) have stated that there is some evidence that compressors might increase the chance of winterkill instead of preventing it.
Probably the method with the most merit for preventing winterkill is the actual plowing of the snow from the lake or melting the snow by pump- ing water on the ice. Ho...wever, the economics of this method prevents its use on most lakes.
Some ponds and lakes in Montana will winter- kill almost every year while others can withstand even the longest, most severe winters. Since the majority of Montana's lakes are fairly deep, win- terkill is not a serious problem in this state, at least when compared with other fishery manage-^ ment problems. However, northern states with most of their lakes consisting of the lowland, shallow water type will rank winterkill as their most serious fish management problem.
