The answer to this question began to cause speculation in the department's regional headquarters in... Glasgow on Oct. 12, 1978, when Ed Bond of Hinsdale brought in a dead animal that appeared to be a wolf. Bond, a stockman, found the animal in north central Valley County in the Buggy Creek drainage, about 24 miles north and slightly west of Glasgow.
Mike Aderhold, the department's information officer in Glasgow and a biologist, examined and autopsied the animal. He said he was "90% sure the animal was a wolf." He noted that wolves are now extremely rare in Montana, and this was the first free- roaming wolf he had seen.
