Faint wagon tracks are still visible where they cross the present Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge about 12 miles north of Great Falls. The Fort Shaw-Fort McLeod Trail (1867-1900) was originally used as a mail route between Fort Shaw on the Sun River and Fort McLeod, Alberta; it subsequently developed into a freight and stage route.
