Robert Sloan of the University of Minnesota will have their atten- tion diverted by a discovery more important than the search for another "terrible lizard." The sweat drips from their foreheads and stings their eyes as they inch their way up a steep clay butte east of the Big Dry Arm of Fort Peck Reservoir. They ap- propriately christen the site: Purgatory Hill. As they rest near the top, they begin to scratch in a layer of silt contai...ning fossilized bone and shell fragments, fragments which soon prove to be in- valuable clues in the search for knowledge about man's distant past.
During the next two summers, Van Valen, Sloan and their stu- dent paleontologists removed over 15 tons of chalky rubble from Purgatory Hill. When sifted, washed and given an acid bath, it yielded six fossil teeth, each about the size of the head of a paper book match. Because teeth resist decomposition, they provide im- portant clues about the past, including information about their former owner's habits and diet.
