The firm went out of business later in 1920. Old-timers recall that the Billings and Miles City suppliers were left with thousands of pounds of agates which they stored in the basement of a Miles City saloon.
They were eventually sold to some people in Huntley.
By the late 1930s, a few agate shops had sprung up along the main high- way. One of the more picturesque was that of Albert Raihl; in 1935, he opened Raihl's Agate Shop about two miles east of Terry along old Highway 10. He cut and polis...hed agates, and he piled the rough agates he had for sale in old farm wagons.
He also sold curios, pioneer items, and Indian artifacts. He operated the shop until his death in 1963.
Today Montana agates — which share the title of state gem with the sapphire — are much desired by rock hounds all over the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world.
People come to gather them, while others order them or make special 15 trips to Montana to buy them from local agate shops. Hunting and gathering them have provided many young people with funds for a college education.
