Wildlife managers often use aerial surveys to determine big game popula- tions. We know more animals are observed under certain conditions, such as complete snow cover and bright sun, and assume that we observe a higher percentage in open habitats.

By marking a sample of a big game population with visually identifiable radio collars, we are beginning to have some better answers to these questions.
Biologists conduct regular aerial surveys of the area, noting all radio- marked animals. They then immediately fly the area again, using a receiver to determine how many radio- marked animals were actually in the survey area. By repeating these flights several times, biologists can estimate, under different conditions and in various habitats, the percentage of animals present but not seen.
