During the forties and following the acceptance of the Pittman-Robert- son program by Montana, the State Fish and Game Department spent considerable time in studies of game herds. Almost every winter during this decade a crew of biologists made a trip through the South Fork winter range gathering information on herd welfare, productivity, mortality, mi- gration, range condition and elk win- tering conditions.
