The back of the head has a pair of markings that resemble eyes. It sometimes appears that the black centers have faint white pupils, an effect that could be caused by lighting or feather arrangement— it is difficult to tell. Biologists theorize that the false eyes deter small birds from attacking the owl from behind.
Although pygmy-owls do not have prominent ear tufts or "horns" like many other owls, they do have small ear tufts which they raise when alarmed.
