I've slowed down considerably, but fortu- nately this is a wet year and I'm still vigorous. The last few drought years did me in, and I wasn't able to flow this far. But Centennials have a way of rejuvenating things, and rivers are no exception.
To use a modern term, I've mel- lowed. With age, both the river and its perspective have broadened. Change is more subtle, but it's also more constant.
Diversity is now my lot. Over 30 species of fishes depend on me, from sand shiners to sunfish, from r...edhorse to goldeye. A warm-water ecosystem is every bit as fascinating as those up- stream trout waters if you really give it a chance.
October 5 I received a much-needed transfusion today at the mouth of Flatwillow Creek.
From here on down, I don't look much different than I did a few years ago when some fellers named Lewis and Clark were fooling around near here.
Cliffs of bentonite cave into me and softshell turtles are burrowing in for a torpid winter's rest.
Of all the seasons, this is the best.
