Butjust as important, these sorts of studies also provide insights that may be helpful in preserving the long-term health and persistence of w ildlife populations. Forexample. many songbirds that breed in the northern hemisphere and spend the winter in Central or South America have been declining at alarming rates. Lazuli buntings, while not declining as precipi- tously as some species, seem to be showing adownward trend over much of their range. Since they spend the winter in scrubby, second-growth areas in Mexico, it is un- likely that tropical deforestation is the cul- prit. This raises the concern that problems on the breeding grounds, such as cowbird parasitism ( cow birds laying eggs in nests of other species) or nest predation.
