In northwestern Montana alone. 77 lion incidents were reported between 1990 and 1993. "At times, we get two or three phone calls a week relating to human-lion incidents." 26 vnwiuim iw MONTANA OUTDOORS says Ed Kelly, FWP's warden captain in Region 1 . "We take every lion incident phone call seriously and respond with information or a field investigation in all cases." In both Regions 1 (Kalispell) and 2 (Missoula), the management strategy for reducing human-lion incidents is creation of intensi...ve lion harvest zones around heavily populated areas. The need for such management zones points out both the threat to human safety that lions can pose and the threat that humans pose to mountain lion habitat security. By reducing the frequency of human-lion conflicts in and around urban areas, a balance can be struck that addresses safety considerations and retains healthy mountain lion popula- tions in backcountry areas.
Although subdivisions and other developments continue to threaten mountain lion habitat throughout the West, the future of the big cats in Montana looks bright.
