As with most new efforts, progress has been slow. But things seem to be picking up.
"I think at first we had an idealistic view that these watershed groups would solve the problems on private lands," says FWP native fish coordinator Shelley Spalding.
"But these folks lead busy lives and have many other things to do. and the problems are complex. This recovery process is not going to happen overnight." Rancher Tom Sanders of the upper Rock Creek watershed committee believes the grassroots approa...ch will work. "I think it's a good idea to solve our problems locally," he says.
"I don't think having the government come in and tell us what to do will solve anything." The upper Rock Creek watershed effort is beginning to show promise. The meetings have been positive, and on one outing, members identified about 40 bull trout spawning "redds" (nests) on the East Fork of Rock Creek above the East Fork Dam. The group has produced a poster to help anglers identify bull trout. Also, area ranchers are planning fencing projects to protect streamside areas.
