36 Death Benefit Claim - Active or Inactive Member Upon notification of a member's death, we will send a death benefit claim to the designated beneficiary. (§ 19-7-901, MCA) Death of Act...ive Member Prior to Retirement The beneficiary of a member who dies before retirement is entitled to select one of the following options for which the member qualified and the beneficiary qualifies: □ A lump-sum payment of the member's accumulated contribu- tions; or □ a survivorship benefit equal to 2.5% of the member's Highest Average Compensation (HAC) for each year of sendee credit, reduced by a factor based upon the number of years the member's age was less than age 65, or the number of years required for the member to have completed 20 years of membership sendee, whichever provides for the larger benefit; or □ A survivorship benefit equal to one-half the member's HAC, if the board finds the member died as a direct and proximate re- sult of injuries received in the course of employment.
