He had heard with a momentary gleam of joy the news of the arrival of more ships off his coast. Now, purely, the Spaniards could return. But no ! Narvaez had sent him a message to the effect that the great chief Cortes was but a traitor, that he had come to subdue him, and would then liberate Montezuma, and leaVe the country.
