Beyond it are the remains of some of the polygonal columns erected by Osirtasen, the oldest remains in all Thebes, coeval probably with Abraham. Osirtasen, who began to reign B. C. 2020, probably was the Pharaoh who took Sarai from Abraham. If, therefore, chronology can be trusted, these pillars were erected about 350 years after Noah's flood, and possibly before Noah died. Beyond these columns are two pedestals of red granite which once supported obelisks ; these would be the porphyry obelisks... seen by Pere Sicard in 1. 714, and which had disappeared before Pococke's visit in 1737. Pere Protais, a Capuchin missionary, who visited Thebes in 1670, describes these two as of jasper. Another old traveller, Norden, describes them as of granite, fine as porphyry, covered with painted hieroglyphics, and apparently destined to support images on their summits.
Proceeding still eastward the traveller will come to a columnar building executed by Thothmes III, beyond which 11 122 THE RUINS OF THESES EASTERN SIDE.
