To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

In 1930-31 a conscious effort was made to select communities which would yield as wide variations of modes of living and of family incomes as possible. In the list for that year was one of the select residential sections of Cincinnati, an aver- age residential district in Columbus, the poorest district in Cincinnati, the small university town of Delaware, the small town of Wellsburg on the edge of the coal and iron district, and Jackson, a medium-sized city in the agricul- tural belt of the Sou...th. All types of occupations and all RESULTS OF THE STUDY 45 types of homes were represented. Taken together, this group forms a well-rounded cross section of American life. Taken separately, the communities provide a wealth of comparative data, worthy of a complete report in them- selves.
In comparing the average scores of these six sections of each age-group the probable error of difference is used, and quotients are translated into chances hi 100 of an actual superiority as indicated. If the mean score for one group is 45 and for another 53, and the probable error of differ- ence is 2, then the difference between the scores, 8, di- vided by the probable error of the difference, 2, gives a quo- tient of 4.
