147 WAR OF THE ROSES.
This was a civil war in England, between the rival houses of York and Lancaster, for the throne. It continued for nearly thirty years, during which time the most revolting atrocities were committed, and in addition to the ordinary loss of life by perpetual war, about eighty mem- bers of royal families fell by the sword.
The emblems of the parties were a red and white rose. The partisans of York adopted the white, and those of Lancaster the red, as their distinguishing symb
...ol, hence the name of the war. At length the bloody battle of " Bosworth Field" decided the contest in favor of Lancas- ter, and the whole matter was compromised by the marriage of Henry VII. To a York Rose, which united the two houses. It was a source of difficulty for nearly eighty years, and threat- ened many times the subversion of the govern- ment. The most violent period was from 14G0 1485. Since that period the rose has been the emblem of England, as the thistle and shamrock are of Scotland and Ireland.
