The courts were then invoked by the city, and pending the legal contro- versy which the company continued for many years hoping to finally tire out the people, the case was carried to the United States Supreme Court which decided in favor of the city and ordered the company to refund to the consumers the amount illegally extorted from them totalling about $12, 000, 000.
