These New York lawyers, escaping from the commotion of a great city to study philosophy, were for me kinsmen of my much-esteemed London friend, Shadworth Hodgson, who for years in a street off Regent Street led the life of a philosophic recluse, cheered by the visits of a few kindred spirits.
Imperious as were the demands of my college work, they did not prevent me from setting up one more book on the stocks.
