My real growth in London, and later in Manchester, lay in discovering the relation of my own religious life to the world around me, and in getting it to work in the world. It was this growth which led, at last, to the formation of the Labour Church in Manchester. The germs of it were all to be found in my life in the country ...; and I never lost the conviction that, for any social regeneration to become possible, a new religious awakening must be the soul of it — that the outer form of social organisation was worth absolutely nothing more than the soul of man could put into it.
