Here he resided for some time engagedin devotional practices, and then made the pilgrimage to Mecca, where hemet with many devotees and conceived the idea of compiling a collectionof stories of the holy men of Islam. To this work he devoted severalyears of his long life; he also composed a Pand-nama or "Book ofCounsels. " But the work by which he is chiefly known is the"Mantiq-ut-tair" or "Parliament of Birds, " and of this we proceed togive some account.
In this allegorical poem various birds representing mystics, unitethemselves under the leadership of the hoopoe in order to journey to thecourt of the Simurgh, a mysterious bird whose name signifies "thirtybirds, " dwelling in Mount Kaf, the mountain which encircles the world.
