The manner in which she made this short confession of faith, as it may be called, was most characteristic. One winter afternoon, Nancy had given a little "tea" to a few friends, and, among the young girls who laughed and chatted around her, was one with whom she had had, the day before, a somewhat serious conversation. As the merry party dispersed, Nancy drew this friend aside and 28 told her that she would find, in a particular place, a note addressed to her, to be read when alone.
This note, ...which was discovered on Nancy's bureau by her girl-friend, was found to contain simply the text and Nancy's words quoted above — nothing more. It was at once a gentle protest against intolerance and a simple declaration of per- sonal belief, and neither the words nor the way in which they were given, can ever be forgotten, by her, to whom they were addressed.
