The shells of snails are a wonderful, a me- chanical, and, if one might so speak concerning * " Spiders, long before Montgolfier, nay, ever since the crea- tion, have been in the habit of sailing through the fields of ether in these air-light chariots I" The spider which produces gossamer is described by naturalists of the size of a pin's head, the buoyance of whose web carries them about, mounting them in the air, probably in search of food, which consists of effluvia of animal and vegetable substances.
