As suggested by these facts, on the second day of Post offices t ^ ie sess i n (May 18) a post office was established at Portsmouth, and, five days later, another at Exeter ; while, a few days later still, post riders were appointed, by whom constant com munication was afterwards maintained between these towns and the army near Boston.
It is one of the strange things in our Revolutionary Troo s history that our forefathers should have so long hoped that their differences with the mother country... might be adjusted by peaceable means. In this loving trust they made no prepara tion for the war which she had precipitated upon them.
