The First New Jersey Brigade, General A. T. A. Torbert, commander, comprising the First, 3 NEW JERSEY TROOPS cond, Third and Fifteenth Regiments (The Fourth :giment was on duty at division headquarters, three mpanies serving as Provost Guard and seven com- nies guarding the ammunition trains) composed the rst Brigade, of the First Division, and reached the ttlefield at 4 p. m. The brigade with its corps had trched fifty-five miles in three days, bivouacking on ; night of June 30th at Manchester... after a march of enty-three miles on that day. The brigade was damped in a meadow near the town, and the tired, :ary men sought their soft and rich beds at an early ur expecting to have a good night's rest, but it was not be. About 10 p. m. the camp was suddenly aroused the shrill, clear notes of the "Assembly." Every in jumped to his feet and seized his arms. Soon the ier came to march, and the " Forward " sounded.
