I have spent so much time in laying before you the proofs of the claims that the document which we are considering has to be regarded as belonging to the very earliest age of the Christian Church, that I have left myself but little to dwell on the picture which it repre- sents of the religion of the Church at that time. It is not, however, unlike that of the dis- courses of St. Peter recorded in the Acts. The phe- nomenon that here presents itself is in accordance with the fact that our Lord did not, during His personal ministry, reveal all the mysteries of His kingdom, but left them to be taught to His Church by the Apostles whom His Spirit was to guide into all the truth.
