58 NORFOLK 12. The Coast — Sand-banks and Light- houses.
The Norfolk coast must be described as a dangerous one to shipping, owing to the number of sand-banks lying off the shore. If we look at a wreck chart of the British coasts, we find that the dots indicating wrecks cluster thickly round the east coast of the county, where several sand-banks lie close to the course steered by many vessels passing up and down the North Sea. At the same time, it must be remembered that one or two of these ban
...ks are of service to seamen, for by breaking the force of the waves, they help to maintain comparative calm in certain "roads" or roadsteads where ships anchor in very rough weather.
Daniel Defoe, the writer of Robinson Crusoe^ made a tour through the Eastern counties in 1722, and was much impressed by the risks run by seamen navigating the sea off Norfolk. He found the barns, sheds, and stables of the farmers dwelling near the shore mainly built of wreckage, and he refers to a great storm that occurred in 1682, when 200 ships were lost between Yarmouth and Cromer.
