Upper side sooty-black, both the wings, except towards the outer margin, thickly speckled with fine pale yellow scales and with conspicuous pale sulphur-yellow spots and bands. On the front wings there are four or five spots arranged in a semicircle near the middle of the front margin ; beyond these a row of three spots, fol- lowed by a smaller elongate spot ; in the middle an irregular transver...se band composed of six partially confluent spots, a small one beyond this on the hind margin, a submarginal series of seven round spots, an elongate curved mark near the apex, and eight small spots on the outer margin. The hind wings have a transverse band before the middle in continuation of that on the front wings, a submarginal curved series of seven spots and six smaller ones on the outer margin ; besides these pale sulphur-yellow markings, there is a round eye-like spot composed of fine blue and dull golden scales on the anterior margin, and a similar one, bordered behind by a broad dark red lunular spot, near the anal angle.
