Richard accepted the offer, on condition that either king might be of the number. To this Philip objected. The two gentlemen quarrelled about a very trivial matter, and, after weeks of correspondence, agreed upon terms of a duel. They fought at night, by the light of a lantern held by a Hack servant, and without seconds. Phillips was killed on the spot. Sheppard was tried, and convicted of manslaughter.
